Name: Michi Sandberg School
The Location
Shan State is largely rural, with only three towns of significant size: Lashio, Kengtung and the capital Taunggyi.
Saung Ton village is about a 2-hour drive from Hebo Airport in Taunggyi.
The People
The village is over 100 years old, consists of 680 inhabitants and is home to 173 households. The majority of the population works as plantation laborers or craftsmen, such as masons and carpenters.
The School
Saung Ton School is a government registered school. The old school was established in 1986 as an elementary school and got an upgrade in 2016 as a secondary school up to Grade 8.
The majority of students at Saung Ton School come from two neighboring villages - Sanung Ton Village and Pyin Lu Village.
The school currently has 175 students (84 boys and 91 girls) between the ages of 5 and 13 and employs 9 female teachers and 2 male teachers.
Sustainability Strategy
The project aims to support Saung Ton School in the construction of a substential building with 5 fully equipped classrooms and 1 staff room.
The approach of our local partner, Child's Dream, is to involve the community in the project to promote ownership and community development.
The government will fund teacher training and salaries and provide curriculum and materials for the classroom. The community will be responsible for the maintenance of the school.
Laying of the foundation stone
With the construction of an adequate educational facility, EduCare e.V. aims to sustainably improve the quality of learning and life for the children of the two communities. The foundation stone was laid in January 2021.
Inauguration
The new extended elementary school in Saung Ton will strengthen children's right to high-quality and further education and is an important pillar against poverty.
Poverty prevents education, education prevents poverty.
The inauguration of the school is planned for the beginning of 2022 and will be named “Michi Sandberg School”. We would like to take this opportunity to deeply thank Michi Sandberg Schwalbach for his generous donation to make this school possible.
