The location
Mabir is a rural community in eastern Nepal. It is located in the Sankhuwasabha region. It is a very remote area. The currently nearest school is a four hour walk to and from Mabir. Due to these distances, 60% to 70% of the children do not attend school at the moment.
The people
The community consists of about 650 residents, 160 of which are children, most of whom belong to the ethnic minorities of the Tamang and some to the Chettri.
For decades the responsible authorities as well as the government have not cared about the community, as remote villages are out of reach of the state. As a result, the population of Mabir is very poor and 70 percent are illiterate. Added to this is the vulnerability to earthquakes and floods, which makes it all the more important to support this area by building an earthquake-proof school.
The School
Construction of a primary school in Mabir in Nepal for 160 children aged 3-14 years with 8 classrooms including school furniture, sanitary facilities and a solar panel.
Two adults will be trained as teachers and another 10 adults will be part of the school support group.
Sustainability Strategy
The guarantee of continuation is provided by a partnership between the village school in Mabir and a western school. The western school commits itself to collect donations for the village school, so that it is financially secured for several years.
In the longer term, United World Schools has an exit plan for the school in Mabir. The key is to work closely with the local authorities to ensure the school's long-term independence. The goal focuses on leaving behind an established, successful and independent school that can be integrated into the national education system.
Laying of the foundation stone
With the establishment of an adequate educational institution EduCare e.V. wants to improve the quality of learning and life for the children of the ethnic fringe groups of the Tamang and occasionally the Chettri in the village of Mabir. The foundation stone was laid in March 2020.
Inauguration
The new primary school in Mabir will strengthen the right of children to a good education and is an important pillar against poverty. Poverty prevents education, education prevents poverty. The inauguration was planned for summer 2020, but will be postponed to 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The school will be named “Lohmiller Family School”. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Richard and Silke Lohmiller for their generous donation to make this school possible.
